Who I am
Carol McGiveron
I am an experienced and compassionate education professional with over 32 years in teaching, including 19 years as a headteacher.
My work is grounded in a deep understanding of child development, mental health, and neurodiversity. I hold advanced qualifications in Attachment Theory, Trauma-Informed Practice, and Person-Centred Counselling, alongside my role as a Safeguarding Lead and Senior Mental Health Lead.
As a licensed Thrive Practitioner and Advanced Drawing and Talking Therapist, I integrate therapeutic approaches to support the emotional wellbeing of children and young people. I am a Hamish and Milo Mental Health Champion which allows me to work with very young children, trained in Nurture principles, and have a strong focus on inclusive, compassionate practice.
Specialising in autism, I hold a Master’s degree in Autism and am qualified in both the ADOS-2 and ADI-R diagnostic tools. My lived experience further enriches my practice, giving me a personal insight into the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals and their families.
My ethos is rooted in empathy, connection, and creating environments where every child feels safe, seen, and supported to thrive.
Therapeutic Support for Children & Young People

Supporting Children’s Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing

I use a wide range of therapeutic approaches to support children’s mental health, emotional wellbeing, and social development. Drawing on trusted programmes such as Hamish & Milo, Thrive, Drawing and Talking Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and solution-focused techniques, I tailor my support to meet each child’s individual needs.
I help children to:
-
Fill gaps in development
-
Manage conflict and difficult emotions
-
Build resilience and confidence
-
Cope with anxiety, sadness, and low mood
-
Navigate change, transitions, and loss
-
Develop a strong sense of self-worth
-
Build and maintain friendships
-
Understand and express anger in healthy ways
-
Process and recover from trauma
My approach is gentle, child-centred, and designed to help children feel understood, supported, and empowered.
Child and Parent/Carers Emotional and Behavioural Support
By combining my therapeutic skills with my 30+ years of teaching experience, working closely with both children and their families, I am able to provide emotional and behavioural support to help bring about positive change.
I do this by (where needed):
-
Completing a thorough assessment with both the child and parents, either together or separately
-
Observing the child in their home environment
-
Developing an understanding of why a child is having emotional and/or behavioural difficulties and sharing this with the family
-
Providing strategies for both child and parents/carers which can be used at home and school
-
Consulting with school and teachers to help the implementation of strategies
-
Providing written and electronic copies of strategies for you to keep
